Two days passed. Malkyn could only judge the time by what was displayed on different consoles around the base, since there was no way to see the sun.

She was exhausted.

Jaeke insisted on her holding flight classes at all hours, nearly non-stop. Each was made up of a dozen student pilots, drawn from his personal guard as well as palace servants and soldiers.

She didn’t mind. Much. It was interesting work, and she knew how important it was to get a working defense force back up and running again as soon as possible. But without an easily accessible reminder of how much time was passing, it was easy to lose track of how long she was actually working.

Her first day back, she’d run the simulations for over eighteen hours before pausing for what barely amounted to more than a quick nap. She had hardly closed her eyes when the call came to resume work.

Today, she’d only been asked to head up twelve hours of classes. Movements from the enemy had drawn off everyone’s attention, forcing them to scramble out to reinforce the shielding around the makeshift lunar base.

The invaders had begun doing bombing runs around Thion. Blasting anything large enough to hide even a single ship. So far, they had concentrated mainly on the outer rings, but it wouldn’t be long before they closed in upon this hidden sanctuary.

All of the soldiers and guards had been called away from training to add new shielding to the blast doors. There was some talk of adding a plasma barrier, but the highly charged particles needed to produce it would likely give away their location. They prepared one just in case, ready to be activated at the very last moment.

There was nothing Malkyn could do to help in those preparations.

She headed back to her ship. Better to try to get a little more sleep now. Every minute of rest would help at this point, whether she ended up running more flight classes or leading a hasty defense of the base.

She was halfway up the gangplank when the sound of running footsteps made her pause.

“Your Highness?”

Malkyn turned and found herself facing a stranger. He wore the old palace livery, but he was definitely not familiar. His age could explain it—he was far too young to have been employed, even in the most simple ways, when she’d left home. Nor was he one of her flight students. “Yes? Did you need me for something.?”

“No, Your Highness.” He began fidgeting, looking far more nervous than the moment should have merited. “His Majesty wanted me to inquire if you were satisfied with your accommodations.”

That hardly seemed something worth asking. Why would Jaeke concern himself with such a minor detail, especially at a time like this? “It’s fine.” She waved her hand in the general direction of her vessel. “I’ve become used to sleeping in tight quarters.”

The young man grew even more agitated. “I’m sorry, but...did no one tell you?”

“Tell me what?”

“There was a room set aside for you after Sergeant Holtwyre was sent to find you.
